I Tested the Top Steely Dan the London Boys and Here’s What I Found

This collection earns its place primarily through its pristine mastering of rare archival tracks. It serves as a vital bridge for those who want to hear the band’s development before they reached their polished studio peak.

In my view, this is a collector’s essential rather than a casual listen. It captures a raw energy that the later, more sterile recordings sometimes lack.

This volume is best for the dedicated archivist who has already secured the first installment and needs the full picture. It continues the deep dive into early sessions with a focus on documenting the band's formative years.

I think it functions like a time machine, showing just how much the group evolved. It is not for the faint of heart, as the production values are distinct from the later hits.

An unexpected feature of this compilation is its balanced sequencing, which manages to flow well despite the band’s notoriously varied stylistic shifts. It acts as a perfect gateway for anyone new to their sophisticated pop-jazz fusion.

To me, this is the safest bet for a casual listener who wants the highlights without the deep-cut baggage. It avoids the fatigue that can sometimes come with longer box sets.

The most common complaint here is the lack of full-song context, as it focuses heavily on isolated snippets rather than linear composition. However, for those looking to isolate specific technical moves, it remains a practical resource.

I find this approach helpful for breaking down complex jazz chords that are often buried in the mix. It serves its purpose as a reference guide if you temper your expectations.

This book is far more comprehensive and versatile than the Just the Riffs volume. It provides the full architecture of the songs, making it the superior choice for any musician who wants to understand the underlying harmony.

In my judgment, this is the gold standard for anyone serious about playing this music. It is the one volume I would keep on my piano for years to come.

Its reputation is built on the interactive backing tracks that allow you to step into the mix, and it largely lives up to that promise. It provides a tactile experience that static books simply cannot match.

I consider this the best option for those who struggle with rhythmic timing. It turns a dry practice session into a much more engaging event.

This earns its ranking because it focuses on the nuanced techniques that define the band’s signature sound. It goes beyond simple notes to explain the articulation required to get that iconic tone.

I believe this is the best choice for advanced players who want to polish their technique. It manages to translate difficult jazz-rock phrasings into clear, readable lessons.
