1. Sky Busters by Matchbox
The greatest strength of this individual model is its accessible entry point for new collectors. It serves as a blank canvas for those who want to see the brand quality before committing to larger sets.
I find these units are most effective as starter items for children. They provide a sturdy, heavy feel that justifies their low cost, though you will notice the finish lacks the detail found on premium models.
Buyers appreciate the simple, durable design for young play.
Collectors often note the paint can chip with heavy use.
This remains the most affordable way to begin a collection.

This set is designed specifically for bulk gift giving or stocking stuffers. If you are shopping for a group of children, this provides enough variety to satisfy everyone without breaking your budget.
In my view, these are the workhorses of the line. They are designed for rough play rather than shelf display.
The variety in the box is the primary draw for parents.

3. Matchbox Sky Busters Boeing 747-400 Die-Cast Toy Airplane
The most surprising element here is the functional landing gear, which is rarely found at this scale. It elevates the plane from a simple paperweight to a recognizable, classic aviation icon.
I would point any aviation enthusiast toward this specific model. It captures the silhouette of the 747 better than most competing toys in this price bracket.
This model is a favorite among fans of commercial airliners.
The proportions are widely considered accurate for a die-cast toy.
Some users report that the wing alignment can vary slightly.

4. Matchbox Sky Busters Diecast Aircraft Collection, 8 Pack Assortment, Toy Planes and Helicopters JDJ05-979H
The most frequent complaint regarding this set involves the duplicate models sometimes appearing in assortments. However, when you look past that, you gain a massive amount of play value for the price.
This is my top pick because it offers the most balanced variety for the cost. It acts as the backbone of a collection, allowing you to establish a fleet in one purchase.
This pack is consistently rated as the best value for money.
Parents value the diversity of aircraft types included.

5. Matchbox Sky Busters Airbus A320 Neo Die-Cast Plane, Silver, Collectible Toy, 18/32
Compared to the 8-pack assortment, this model offers much higher aesthetic precision. It is a focused choice for someone who cares about specific airline liveries and cleaner paint applications.
I think this piece suits the dedicated collector who wants quality over quantity. It lacks the messy variety of a bulk pack, favoring a sharper, more refined look.
The silver finish is frequently praised for its clean appearance.
Serious hobbyists prefer these individual blister packs.
Collectors note that the detail level is higher than the multi-packs.

7. Matchbox – 1933 Ford Tri-Motor – MBX Sky Busters 24/32 – HVM62 – Big Card – Plane – Indiana Jones – Mattel 2024-1:64
The biggest strength of this model is its historical charm. It stands out as a specialized piece that appeals to those who value the legacy of early aviation over modern speed.
In my opinion, this is the most distinctive design in the series. It does not try to be a generic jet, and that character makes it a necessary addition for any vintage-focused shelf.
Collectors appreciate the nod to aviation history in this design.
The size fits perfectly into a 1:64 scale collection.
Some buyers mention the wing structure is delicate for play.

Choosing Between Them
If you want to start a collection, I strongly suggest the 8-pack assortment because it provides the most diverse fleet for the price. For the specialized collector, the Airbus A320 Neo or the Ford Tri-Motor offer the specific, high-quality look you likely want for display. I recommend choosing based on whether you prioritize sheer variety or individual model detail.
Keep in mind that these are mass-produced toys, so you should expect varying paint quality across the line. Even the best sets may have small imperfections, but that is the trade-off for such an accessible entry point into aviation collecting.
